Meka-Samurai | 2D Mecha Character Rig & Technical Breakdown

Meet ORBIT: The Meka-Samurai

This project features Orbit, a high-fidelity 2D character rig built in Toon Boom Harmony 24. Designed with a focus on mechanical rigidity and production-efficient workflows, this rig explores the intersection of traditional "Cut-out" techniques and modern Master Controller automation.

Technical Highlights
Advanced Master Controllers: Custom-scripted sliders for drawing substitutions (Hand Poses, Facial Expressions) and visibility toggles for the Katana, reducing animator "search time" in the timeline.

Clean Node Architecture: Fully organized Node View using backdrops and logical grouping. Prioritized a "Studio-Standard" layout to ensure the rig is easily navigable for other departments.

Hybrid Patching System: Utilizes a combination of Auto-Patches and Z-depth nudging to create seamless mechanical joints (Ankle, Knee, Elbow).

Forward Kinematics (FK) Focus: Designed for "Mecha-style" animation, emphasizing weight and deliberate mechanical arcs rather than organic deformation.

Layer Breakouts: Strategic use of Overlay and Line Art/Colour Art selectors to manage complex armor overlapping.

The Design Process
Included in the breakdown are my initial character sketches and colour swatching. The goal was to create a character that felt "heavy" and tactile, using a palette that highlights the different metal textures of the samurai plating.

Software Used:
Toon Boom Harmony 24 (Premium)
